Career Days at BLA

What goes on behind the scenes at our beloved Fenway Park? Most members of Red Sox Nation can only guess, but 6 BLA students found out. They were participants in the ninth annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2. This event is organized by the Boston Private Industry Council and the Boston Public Schools. In total, 54 members of the Boston Latin Academy Class of 2006 visited the Boston Bar Association, the law firm of Foley, Hoag and Eliot, Mellon Financial, the State House, City Hall, IBM, and the Boston University Office of Community Affairs. Dan Cuddy '90 is the BLA representative of the Private Industry Council and arranged the event. He and Pat Brophy '89 worked together to enable several BLA students to tour departments of Boston City Hall. In addition to observing and learning about career opportunities, our students were great representatives of Boston Latin Academy.

Another opportunity to explore careers is provided through the GLS/BLA Association. In April alums led by Margaret Sullivan '78 participate in an in-house career day. Each year for more than 10 years, Margaret has organized about 20 participants to come to BLA and speak to members of the sophomore class. Participants talk about careers in law, medicine, engineering, the media and more. Gail Sunderlund Tsolirides ‘77 a pharmacist, has participated for several years. She remembers her days at BLA and acknowledges those days as a springboard and “from that springboard I have accomplished things that I never dreamed possible” When she participates in Career Day she sees that among “the silent kids, and the ones who pretend not to listen, there may be one (or even a couple!) whose destiny will be directly influenced by my words.” The alums come away with a picture of our students and their hopes and dreams. The students come away with a new appreciation for the people who attended, graduated from and now support Boston Latin Academy.

Please keep our students in mind if your company has an internship or a jobs program that hires capable, smart, enthusiastic young people. Call the school @617-635-9957. Volunteers needed to participate in next spring's event, please contact Margaret Sullivan at margsull@bu.edu or call 617/327-1761.
