| Edward G. Atherton Fund - Classics |
Edward G. Atherton was a teacher of the Classics at Girls' Latin School. This fund was established in 1954 with a donation from Mr. Atherton's will. The will directs that four fifths of the income be given as a scholarship to a senior who shall, because of his or her conduct and scholarship, be deemed worthy of an education at a Liberal Arts College. This senoir is preferrably one who has displayed good work in the Homer class. The remaining fifth of the income is to be used in the purchase of books or artwork for the Classics Department. Because the Homer class has regrettably been discontinued, this award is presented to a student demonstrating excellence in the classics. |
| Ida Cohen Corwin and Marion Cohen Lappin Prize - Mathematics |
This prize has been awarded since 1979 to two seniors, a male and a female, demonstrating excellence in mathematics. This fund was created in 1978 by a donation from Mrs. Corwin and was increased by memorial donations from her family and friends, after her death in 1981. Mrs. Corwin graduated from GLS in 1917. She taught at the School from 1925 to 1934 The name of Marion Cohen Lappin, '29, an elementary school teacher, was added to the prize in 1933 at the request of the Corwin family. |
| Alice Cunningham Lacey Memorial Scholarship - Promise of Usefulness |
This fund was established in 1982 with a bequest from Alice Cunningham Lacey. Ms. Lacey was a member of the Class of 1914 and taught at Girls' Latin School. She was an attorney and also a past president of the Association. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who "in point of character and ability gives promise of future usefulness..." The will directs a preference for Roman Catholic women attending Radcliffe College, but the Board has reviewed other applicants in light of changes in the student body as well as the changed position of Radcliffe. |
| Fenway Fund - Most Deserving |
The Class of 1955 was the last class to spend its entire GLS career at the Evans Way location in Boston's Fenway. The Fenway Fund was created in 1990 by the Class of 1955 on the 35th anniversary of its graduation. Given for the first time in 1995, the award is meant for a deserving student who will enter college in the fall with no other financial aid from the Association or the Academy. |
| Griswold / Foley / Roper Award - Most Deserving |
Ellen Griswold, Mary Foley and Cora Roper were well known and well liked teachers at Girls' Latin School. Once weighted toward scholarship, this award is now given to the most deserving applicant. |
| Ernest G. Hapgood Memorial Fund - Education |
The Class of 1940 established this fund in 1990 on its 50th Anniversary. The award was first given in 1996. The award is presented to a senior, preferrably one planning a career in education or some other career in which teaching plays a major role. Mr. Hapgood came to GLS in 1908 to head the Math Department, became Headmaster in1920 ans served in that position until his retirement in 1948. At GLS, Mr. Hapgood established the first chapter of the National Honor Society in New England. He died in 1953. |
| Jabberwock Prize - Excellence in Writing |
Created by the Class of 1930 on the occasion of its 60th reunion in 1990, the Jabberwock Prize was awarded for the first time in June 1991. The award is made to a graduating senior for excellence or promise of achievement in creative or expository writing in English. |
| Anne R. and Rita M. Kelley Scholarship - Science |
This scholarship was created in 1983 with a donation from Rita M. Kelley's will. It is awarded to a senior outstanding in science selected by the headmaster / mistress. Dr. Kelley a member of the class of 1934, was named an Outstanding Alumna at the Centennial Dinner in 1978. A physician specializing in oncology, she was acting head of medical oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a recipient of the Bronze Medal of the American Cancer Society. |
| Mary C. McMackin Scholarship - Service to School |
This scholarship was created in 1975 by a donation from Mrs. McMackin's estate. It is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated service to the school. Mary Collette Dowd graduated from GLS in 1912 or 1913. She was married to Charles B. McMackin. |
| Mercury Grant - Academic and Athletic Excellence |
This fund was created in 1990 by Marie Mercury Roth '41 and Edna Mercury Rober '47 in appreciation of the education they recieved at GLS and in recognition of the lifetime patterns of learning and the quest for excellence fostered and developed during their school years. The Mercury Grant is given to a scholar-athlete who, during the course of his or her term at school, has demonstrated high academic ability as well as loyal participation and meaningful contribution to the school's athletic program. The recipient shall be a dedicated student and athlete, who might have been a better scholar if he or she had not participated in sports or who might have been a better athlete if less time had been spent on academic pursuits. The recipient is selected by a committee consisting of Headmaster / mistress, one department chairperson, a counselor, two coaches (one male, one female), and two teachers (on male, one female). Edna Rober died July 9, 2001. |
| Milgroom Scholarship - Scholarship and Career in Law |
Judge Lillian D'Ambrosio Milgroom, '39, established this scholarship on the occasion of her 50th reunion. The scholarship is awarded annually to a senior who has a good scholastic record, is in need of financial aid, preferably an Italian-American female who intends to pursue or is interested in a law career. The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 1977. Judge Milgroom was a 1987 recipient of the Association's Outstanding Alumna Award. Judge Milgroom died at the age of 80 on March 25, 2001 after a long battle with cancer. |
| David E. Rosengard Scholarship - Mathematics and Teaching |
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Mrs. Bruna Rosengard, widow of David Rosengard, and the class of 1963. Mr. Rosengard who died in 1988, was Chairman of the Mathematics Department at the school from 1958 to 1965. He served as Assistant Headmaster from 1963 to 1965. The Rosengard Scholarship is awarded to a senior, preferrably one enrolled in higher level mathematics, who is interested in becoming a teacher. |

Mr. Tierney was a music teacher at Girls' Latin School from 1941 to 1963. The scholarship was established by his family and friends in 1975. The scholarship is presented annually to a student demonstrating excellence in music, with preference given to applicants planning a career in music. |
| Francis I. Watson History Prize |
Ms. Watson was a history teacher at Girls' Latin School. This prize is awarded to a student demonstrating excellence in history. The Watson prize traditionally a book, funded from the Association's operating funds. In 1983 the fund was endowed by the Board with a $500 capital donation to perpetuate the tradition. Since then, cash prizes have been awarded. |

The class of 1933 created this fund in 1983 in honor of the 50th anniversary of its graduation from the Girls' Latin School. A prize is awarded to the graduating senior who has shown the greatest scholarly improvement since the Fourth Class. |

| Class of 1952 Edith Baras Burke Prize |
Created in 1995 by a bequest from the estate of Edith Baras Burke '52. The class of 1952 added a 45th reunion gift in 1997. Ms. Burke's years at GLS foretold a lifelong love of the classics and language, both written and spoken. She recieved her bachelor's degree from Radcliffe and a master's in the classics from Harvard, then won a Fulbright to study in the Netherlands. Ms. Burke moved to Washington State in 1960 where she was a Latin teacher, and then editor of the University of Washington's Pacific Northwest Quarterly and Modern Language Quarterly. Ms. Burke so believed in the developement of well rounded imaginative people that she kept a file of every book she gave and to whom. Over 4,000 books given to children whom she followed as they grew in their careers. First awarded in 1996, this prize is to be given to a graduating senior who is a well rounded student with a love of language and the classics - a "renaissance" student. |
